Landscape architects would probably design public areas very differently if they weren’t meant to be inhabited. Imagine what your favorite public place would be like without any people engaged in it. This is pretty difficult to truly envision this, but I just came across a really cool time-lapse experiment by Thrash Lab called Empty America. The links below take humans out of the equation in some of the famous locations in San Francisco and New York:
It’s apocalyptic in a sense, but very powerful and really emphasizes the importance of people being in the spaces we design. Of course there are exceptions, but most spaces are intended to be used and enjoyed by people of all ages. The more the better.
